(TISC) TISC, an affiliated company of TBMC, devotes its efforts to application software design, database construction, technology innovation and system integration of electronic publication. With the advent of information age and knowledge economy, TBMC frequently sends its professional staff abroad to discover new products from the advanced countries and introduces high-quality online databases to the local market. We expect to provide the most up-to-date and valuable information for academic organizations, government agencies, and various industries in Taiwan. Our products and services have earned a great reputation in the market and we continue to grow steadily while becoming one of the major electronic publication database traders. Having represented and marketed English databases for years, we accumulated an in depth base of human resources, knowledge and techniques and we considered the possibility of designing and constructing Chinese (English) databases. Following a carefully constructed plan along with substantial investment, in 1996 we set up our digitization and editing department to publish Chinese electronic publications and databases. We also successfully developed the full-text retrieval system to make information in databases on CD-ROM and web databases easier to access for end users. This technology was adopted by dozens of organizations including Academic Sinica, Industrial Technology Research Institute of Taiwan, Research Development and Evaluation Commission, National Central Library, National Chengchi University, National Cheng Kung University, National Taiwan Normal University and National Central University. The growth of TISC indicates that the development of application software for Chinese electronic publications greatly meets the needs in the market. In response to the trend of globalization, TISC has begun to develop the second- generation information retrieval system, TURS, by using the UNICODE standard. The system was introduced into the market after one year of development and was immediately adopted by the prominent academic institutions and government agencies, including Academic Sinica, the Control Yuan, the Legislative Yuan, National Central Library, and National Taiwan University College of Medicine. Since its foundation, TISC continues to improve its skills and to acquire in depth experience in technical support and system development, and to provide highly professional services for both our local and overseas customers.
