全球商學教育掀起一股創業研究熱潮，在美國的大學學院成立創業學程與學位課程，並且可以在世界各地的高等教育機構中看到企業育成中心如雨後春筍般紛紛建立。美國中小企業管理局更認為，美國境內的中小企業與新興創業公司是帶動國內經濟成長的主要趨動力。他們提供了美國經濟中75%的工作機會，佔有美國出口商總數的97%以及雇主數量的99.7%。除此之外，這些新興創業公司更是創新技術與方法的重要來源。透過研究發現，中小企業在平均每人申請專利數上，可以是大型企業的13~14倍以上。這樣的經濟模式在歐洲同樣可以獲得印證，透過2012/2013歐洲中小企業年度報告（Annual Report on European SMEs）分析，歐洲的中小企業可以占到整體經濟規模的99%之多。
